I've
always wondered if I could eat clean and still Keto... but first I had to
really figure out what eating clean meant. So this is what I believe is the
best way to eat clean:
- Eat whole foods: basically you eat foods that are straight from a far such as, whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, grass-fed and free-range meats, low dairy products, unsalted nuts, and seeds.
- Avoid processed foods: processed foods are any food that has a label. A label basically means that more than one ingredient was used to make that food. You don’t have to eliminate all processed foods but if you can't pronounce an ingredient on a label, then basically you shouldn’t be eating it.
- Eliminate refined sugar: Refined sugar is nothing except calories but other sweeteners can be used.
- Eat five or six meals a day: by eating smaller meals throughout the day you can jump start you metabolism and reduce the chance of binge eating unhealthy foods. Since you eat so often, you never feel the need to cheat.
- Cook your own meals: Clean, whole foods need very little preparation beyond chopping and sautéing to make delicious meals for you and your family.
- Combine protein with [healthy] carbs: Always make sure that each meal is balanced. You’ll be less tempted to eat junk food if you combine protein with carbs or carbs with fats. Just something as simple as that will quash hunger pangs.
What parts of the pyramid you don't want if you're Keto-ing:
- Fruits: You want to stay away from any fruits EXCEPT berries. The anti-oxidents helps rev metabolism and are great for weight loss. I can't/won't tell you how much to have and how much to not have but I will definitely recommend looking into ANY fruits you might want see how much you can have if you are Keto-ing. The last thing you want is to not be in Ketosis because of your taking in too many sugars.
- Whole Grains: The reason you want to stay away from whole grains mostly because it is made up of complex carbs that means that the carbs are made up of more than one thing such as sugar. And remaining in Ketosis because you need to keep in control your sugar and carb levels.
- Beans & Legumes: The reason why you don't have to have these is because they're crazy carb heavy and that really is the opposite of what you want in the Keto-Diet.
